Richard Hassell is an Australian-born architect and artist who has lived in Singapore since 1989. He founded the architectural practice WOHA with Wong Mun Summ in 1994. WOHA has exhibited their work in the Venice Biennale in 2016 with a video installation entitled Fragments of an Urban Future and in New York at the Skyscraper Museum with Garden City | Mega City both in 2016. WOHA have received 11 President’s Design Awards, Singapore’s highest design accolade. In 2018 WOHA received the prize for the World Building of the Year at the World Architecture Festival for their mixed use project Kampung Admiralty.

In it WOHA demonstrates the power of integrating landscapes and energy flows in Virtuous Cycles within architectural and urban design, using many of their own projects for inspiration and as exemplars. They show that it is possible to improve the quality of life within high-density environments while significantly reducing their environmental, social and economic impacts.

Oasia Hotel Downtown tower, WOHA, Singapore
The crimson-coloured Oasia Hotel Downtown tower comprises a vine-clad stack of open-to-the-elements atria, and the new vegetation growing on the façades and contained within the building amounts to more than ten times that of the site in its natural state. The tower received the “2018 Best Tall Building Worldwide” at the CTBUH Awards.
